Drug Addiction

Drug Dependency or Addiction: A need or overwhelming physiological desire to indulge in drug use. This is characterized by (although sometimes subtle) compulsive and uncontrolled behavior during and after the consumption of drugs, feelings of overconfidence, egotistical and narcissistic behavior, usually to the detriment of the users' health, relationships, and social standing. Like other addictions, drug addiction is medically defined as a treatable illness.

The biological systems forming the foundation of Drug Dependency can be quite varied and complex (some of these elements are: sexual abuse, physical and mental abuse, stress, anxiety, sleep disorder, fears, fatigue, and loneliness, among others.

Drug detoxification is carried out to remove the substance and drug-related toxins from the body, withdrawing this person from the intake of drugs, (Drying out the system) usually with cross-tolerance drugs, e.g. benzodiazepines are sometimes used to manage the withdrawal symptoms. Post-therapeutic care, such as group therapy, or self-help groups, are usually encouraged to maintain substance abstention. Often, people suffering from drug abuse also are addicted to other substances, which might require additional medical treatment.
